Introducing the Malibu NoseRiding Invitational (MNI)
An innovative professional surf contest.

Who, among eight world-class professional female noseriders competing together with eight world-class professional male noseriders, will accumulate the most nose-time on a series of magnificent waves at world-famous Malibu Surfrider Beach?

The Promotion

Promoting the Malibu Noseriding Invitational will create greater awareness of the noseriding technique, objective judging with timed noserides, surfer’s stewardship of the water environment, protection of the surf zone, gender equality, surfing etiquette, and Malibu’s surfing heritage.  In addition, we will broadcast a spectacle that will excite and educate our audience worldwide, benefiting our elite sponsors, their brands, and our water environment.

We’re planning for Oct/Nov 2025. Our contest format will reach hardcore professional surfers because of its history as the first professional contest in the sport of surfing and non-surfers because of its simplicity.

The Program
Riding for Mother Earth

The MNI program is designed to reach a vast worldwide audience of hardcore surfers and non-surfers through the Internet and TV.  Our onsite audience will consist mainly of hardcore surfers who will get excellent points of view from the ~700-yard beach, fishing pier, boats, and mobile devices.

Within 30 days after launching our Facebook, we generated over 100,000 organic views by just word-of-mouth! Our Facebook “Vote For The Best NoseRide/Beach Environment GoPro Photo Contest” generated over 182,000 views in the first week!

This classic contest format is based on the 1965 Tom Morey Professional Noseriding Invitational, which is authoritatively considered the first professional surfing contest in the sport’s history.  It will attract baby boomers and millennials and is currently trending with women, the fastest-growing market segment.

This contest format is simple and easy to understand by even non-surfers – it’s simply a race for the most time spent on the nose, considered the first extreme maneuver in the sport. It is an actual test of skill requiring the use of a surfer’s entire repertoire of surfing maneuvers and mastery of waves. Not only are competitors challenged by the constantly changing wave, but posing in an optimum position on the nose while defying gravity is the quintessential maneuver in surfing, demonstrating total domination of the wave and surfboard.

The contest will be held on one perfect day, during a waiting period in October/November, when spectacular waves are regularly forecast to appear at world-famous Malibu Surfrider Beach. The best wave trackers in the world will ensure ideal waves on one perfect day for a picturesque contest.

Then the stage will be set, and 16 strategically placed HD cameras will record our professional noseriders.

Four hours of competition, starting with an equal amount of women and men, four per heat, with the two accumulating the most nose-time advancing.  Awards go to first place in the final heat, most nose-time on a single wave that could happen any time during the whole contest, and most nose-time for all waves in a heat, which can occur in any heat.

Leading up to the contest through summer, we will build excitement and grow our audience as we introduce our sponsors and contestants. We will broadcast video announcements at MalibuNoseRiding.com and on our social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. We’ll produce short 2-minute videos to educate our audience about the historic surfing culture at Malibu and the highly successful Malibu Lagoon restoration, along with profiles on the competitors and their noserider surfboard design.

The Contest
On One Perfect Day

It’s a race against the clock to determine who can accumulate the most nose-time on a series of waves.  It’s an objective judging system based simply on nose time that even non-surfers can easily understand.  Contestants love it because it’s fair.

Noseriding is the quintessential maneuver on longboards.  Nose-time is the only objective judging system that tests surfing mastery on waves under ten feet on a noserider-type surfboard.

Noseriding for time requires superior technical skills, exceptional athletics, and extraordinary balance.  A professional competitor utilizes their entire repertoire of surfing maneuvers to get to the nose, let alone noseride for time.

The point-break waves at Malibu Surfrider Beach allow for long wave rides, giving competitors lots of time to demonstrate their best noseriding skills and wave knowledge.  The entrance to the various viewing areas is accessible to the public.

Riding the nose in this contest will be highly visible. A light color designates the nose area to increase the judge’s and camera’s view when a contestant’s feet are correctly positioned in the designated nose area.  Multiple drones, strategically placed water and beach cameras, will record the exciting action of each nose ride.  The camera angles during the broadcast will add to the viewer’s experience, and the clock ticking off time will add to the excitement.

There is no noserider length limitation. The nose area length is 20% of the size of the board. There will be no artificial means to extend the length allowed, e.g., by adding an extension device. This measurement method is to promote noserider design advancements.

A state-of-the-art timing system will accurately record each contestant’s nose time. The monitoring system will enable a final rule that is accurate.

Media Plan

During the late spring, we will launch the MalibuNoseRiding.com website and social media with news content, which will include high definition video announcing major sponsors, and the cash purse for the contest winners. We will introduce our worldwide surf-trackers and their process of forecasting ideal surf conditions to select the perfect day for the contest and will feature educational information about the water environment.

Through the summer we will strategically release video content about major developments associated with the contest sponsors when contestants accept invitations, contestant bios/profiles, stats, and surf clips. We shall promote the sport of noseriding, the art form of standing precariously on the front end of the surfboard while defying gravity, its history, the contestants, past and present, and its ideal environment at Malibu Surfrider Beach.

Hundreds of video clips and images shall be released in thousands of posts through our website and social media to gain public awareness and maximum exposure for the contest, sponsors, and advertisers.

We’ll attract hard-core surfers, from baby boomers to millennials on-site, for when the waves show on that one perfect day.

Within 30 days after launching our Facebook we generated over 100,000 organic views by just word-of-mouth! Our Facebook “Vote For The Best NoseRide/Beach Environment GoPro Photo Contest” generated over 182,000 views in the first week!

We anticipate generating a substantial worldwide audience for our “On One Perfect Day” program due to the many points of attraction to which we will draw attention once we launch with our numerous announcements.
